TRANScenDANCE:
Trans people within Dance and Performative Spaces

Project description:TRANScenDANCE is an international project dedicated to fostering more inclusive, accessible and welcoming cultural spaces that celebrate diversity. Through practical tools and inclusive practices, TRANScenDANCE empowers educators and facilitators to create safer, more supportive environments where trans individuals can thrive in the performing arts. Aligned with the EU’s LGBTIQ Equality Strategy 2020–2025, the project works to break down barriers, combat prejudice, and ensure that cultural spaces truly reflect and embrace all identities.

The project objectives are:

  • TRANScenDANCE aims to foster safer, more inclusive cultural spaces—both institutional and underground—for trans and non-binary individuals, whether they are artists or not.

  • The project amplifies the voices, experiences, and needs of trans and non-binary people through visibility, representation, and collective creation.

  • It also seeks to bridge research and practice by implementing inclusive, body-based methodologies rooted in performance, movement, and artistic expression.

The expected results of the project are:

  • Scientific Literature Review. We begin with a comprehensive review of existing research and studies on the realities faced by trans and non-binary individuals in Europe, laying the foundation for the project’s actions and priorities.

  • International Training & Exchange. Through structured international trainings, we bring together trans-led advocacy groups, researchers, and artists—including trans and non-binary creatives—to share tools, develop skills, and build trans-inclusive approaches in the arts.

  • National Awareness Events. Each partner country hosts public events to raise awareness, engage communities, and invite reflection on gender identity, inclusion, and access to cultural spaces.

  • Surveys Of Needs In Artistic And Educational Spaces. We collect data from trainers, facilitators, and cultural institutions—across all gender identities—to understand current gaps and opportunities in creating inclusive, safe, and accessible environments for trans and non-binary people.

  • Interviews With Trans And Non-Binary Individuals. We conduct interviews with trans and non-binary individuals, artists and non-artists alike, to gather insights on their daily realities and challenges in accessing and shaping cultural spaces—while making their stories visible.

  • Creation And Dissemination Of A Training Toolkit. Based on the research, surveys, and interviews, we design a practical toolkit for trainers and facilitators. It includes inclusive language guidance, workshop methodologies, and embodied practices from dance and theatre—adaptable across disciplines and audiences.

  • Collaborative Creation Of Performances. Through workshops facilitated by partners and participants, we co-create inclusive performances involving the trans, queer, and wider LGBTQIA+ communities and allies. These productions blend diverse performative arts and are open to both professionals and amateurs.
