Stepping into the Unknown: From Awareness to Action

Youth Exchange | 1–7 March 2026 | Durău, Romania

The international Youth Exchange “Stepping into the Unknown: From Awareness to Action” took place in Durău, Romania, between March 1st and 7th, 2026, hosted by Gamma Institute as part of its Erasmus+ Youth Accreditation.

The project brought together 25 young people and 6 group leaders in an intercultural learning experience focused on self-awareness, emotional resilience, communication, cooperation, and personal growth.

Developed within the annual concept “Mapping the Journey”, the exchange invited participants to explore a fundamental question: How can we move forward when we do not know exactly what comes next?

Through non-formal education, storytelling, creative expression, reflection, and collaborative activities, young people explored the relationship between their inner resources, the challenges they encounter, and their capacity to take meaningful action.

Building Trust: The Journey Begins

Every meaningful journey begins with connection.

The programme created opportunities for young people from different cultural backgrounds to meet, communicate, and gradually build trust. Interactive exercises and collaborative challenges encouraged participants to step beyond familiar roles and discover new ways of relating to others.

Working in multicultural groups allowed participants to experience different perspectives, practise active listening, and explore the importance of empathy and mutual respect.

Creating an inclusive and supportive environment was an essential part of the learning process, helping participants feel more confident in expressing their ideas and participating in group activities.

Looking Within: Discovering Personal Resources

One of the central themes of the exchange was self-awareness.

Through storytelling, guided reflection, and creative exercises, participants explored their personal values, emotions, strengths, and aspirations.

The activities invited them to reflect on how previous experiences influence their choices, how they respond to uncertainty, and which personal resources can help them face new challenges.

Rather than offering predefined answers, the learning process encouraged participants to discover their own perspectives and recognise their capacity for change.

This exploration supported the development of self-confidence, emotional awareness, and a deeper understanding of personal identity.

Stepping Beyond the Comfort Zone

Uncertainty can often be experienced as an obstacle. During the exchange, it became an opportunity for learning.

Experiential activities and group challenges encouraged participants to engage with unfamiliar situations, express themselves creatively, and practise flexibility and adaptability.

Through cooperation, problem-solving, and shared reflection, young people explored how trust, communication, and mutual support can help them navigate unexpected situations.

Participants were encouraged to recognise that taking action does not always require complete certainty. Sometimes, growth begins with the willingness to try, learn, and adjust along the way.

From Individual Awareness to Collective Action

As the learning journey progressed, the focus expanded from individual development to relationships, cooperation, and community responsibility.

Through collaborative activities, discussions, and creative exercises, participants explored their roles within groups and reflected on how individual choices can influence collective experiences.

Leadership was approached as a shared process involving initiative, responsibility, active listening, and respect for different perspectives.

Participants also worked on personal and collective action plans, connecting the insights gained during the exchange with possible changes in their everyday lives and communities.

The programme encouraged young people to see themselves not only as learners but also as active contributors capable of creating positive change.

Intercultural Learning: Growing Through Differences

The international dimension was an essential part of the experience.

Intercultural activities provided opportunities to discover different traditions, ways of thinking, and personal experiences.

By working together, participants practised communication in English, developed greater openness towards cultural differences, and strengthened their ability to cooperate across linguistic and cultural boundaries.

These interactions helped transform diversity into a learning resource, encouraging empathy, tolerance, and a stronger sense of belonging to a wider European community.

Reflection, Learning Outcomes and Future Steps

Reflection was integrated throughout the exchange, helping participants connect their experiences with their personal development.

Through individual and group reflection, young people identified newly developed competences and explored how these could be applied beyond the mobility.

Participant feedback highlighted perceived improvements in self-confidence, English-language communication, public speaking, active listening, empathy, and adaptability.

The six official evaluations submitted by group leaders also reported positive learning outcomes, particularly in relation to young people's autonomy, teamwork, responsibility, intercultural cooperation, and willingness to become more actively involved in their communities.

Beyond the educational activities, the exchange created opportunities for meaningful connections, shared experiences, and new perspectives on personal growth.

A Journey That Continues

“Stepping into the Unknown: From Awareness to Action” was more than an international mobility. It was an invitation to explore uncertainty with curiosity, discover personal strengths, connect with others, and recognise the power of conscious action.

The experience reminded participants that personal development is not about having every answer, but about learning to move forward with greater awareness, confidence, and responsibility.

The journey may have ended in Durău, but its lessons can continue through the choices, relationships, and initiatives that participants bring into their everyday lives.

From awareness to action, every step matters.

This activity was implemented within the Erasmus+ Youth Accreditation of AICSCC – Gamma Institute, project 2025-1-RO01-KA151-YOU-000300708, co-funded by the European Union.
